Membership Monday: Meet New Member Michaela Moreland

    Let’s Meet….
    New PRSA Member, Michaela Moreland

Eight months into her first job working in the public relations field, Michaela is a part-time marketing & communication assistant for Virginia Beach Public Library (VBPL). She graduated last May from Old Dominion University (ODU), where she majored in communication with a minor in English. Her involvement in ODU’s PRSA student chapter, PRSSA, where she served in a joint secretary/treasurer role, helped solidify her interest in the field. It also helped her understand the value of association membership.

“Joining PRSA Hampton Roads seemed like a logical post-college step when I started working in VBPL's Marketing & Communication unit,” she said.

If she didn’t opt for a career in public relations, Michaela says she would still work in libraries, on the front lines, serving the public. “I worked for VBPL in a public service job for several years before joining the marketing unit, and I really enjoyed it,” she said. “I also still work part-time as a library assistant in the youth services department of Chesapeake Central Library.”

Now, let’s really get to know Michaela:

If you could only eat at one restaurant for the rest of your life, where would you goChick-Fil-A is one of the few restaurants/fast food places that I can eat multiple times in one week ... or in a day ... and not feel sick at the thought of eating there again.

What’s your favorite book (or movie or song) of all timeThis is a tough question--I change my answer often--but right now my favorite is “Crown of Midnight,” book #2 of the “Throne of Glass” series by Sarah J. Maas. It's an awesome fantasy series with amazing, emotional twists.

What’s one thing about you that others are surprised to discoverThose who don’t work in libraries are surprised that I’m not a “librarian” though I am library employee. To become a librarian, you must earn a library-specific master's degree in information- or library science.

What's the last picture you took with your phone? I took a picture of what I thought would be my bridesmaid dress for my friend Kylea's wedding. But we found later that it wouldn’t be ready in time. I do not know what I will be wearing to her wedding, but I know it won't be the dress in that picture.

Name five people you'd invite to your dream dinner partyMy dream dinner party would involve geeking out over books and “Star Wars,” my two longest-lasting loves. I’d invite my favorite authors, Sarah J. Maas, Lauren Oliver and Marissa Meyer. The presence of Daisy Ridley (Rey) and John Boyega (Finn) would fulfill the “Star Wars” quota.
