We’ve all been guilty of them. In haste to get out our messaging, we write copy that covers the necessary information but fails to get notice and traction. If this is happening to you, your writing just might be ladened with language and tactics that cause your audiences to tune out.

In this lunchtime webinar, our two seasoned PR professional hosts will address and lead discussion on the top 10 pitfalls you want to avoid in your writing to get the attention your messaging deserves.

This virtual Zoom session is open to all PRSA Hampton Roads members and nonmembers, but all attendees are asked to register. You will receive an email confirmation with the meeting number and password for the event.

Sonja Barisic, APR is an independent public relations practitioner who has spent nearly three decades telling stories — and honing ways to overcome writing pitfalls. After 18 years as a reporter with The Associated Press, Sonja turned her focus to nonprofit communications. She recently founded Sunflower Communications, LLC, which strives to help organizations blossom through storytelling. A former president of PRSA Hampton Roads, she currently serves as treasurer of PRSA’s Mid-Atlantic District. In 2019, PRSA-HR named her a Member of the Year. When she’s not writing about nonprofits helping people in the community or volunteering for PRSA, she has fun reviewing restaurants for The Virginian-Pilot.

Nealy Gihan is an experienced professional communicator with more than 15 years of experience crafting ideas and concepts into strategies, words, and images. Throughout her career, she’s worn many hats as a record company publicity director, newspaper journalist and editor, college instructor, corporate communicator, nonprofit communicator, and published author. Currently, Nealy serves as the PRSA Hampton Roads communications coordinator and senior communications and marketing specialist for Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority. She also runs Purple Inked LLC, which helps authors, individuals, and businesses craft words that move, motivate, and influence others.
