    Local public relations society announces winners of annual Pinnacle Awards program

    The Public Relations Society of America’s Hampton Roads Chapter (PRSA-HR) announced the winners of its annual Pinnacle Awards Competition at a lunch meeting June 8 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.

    Local public relations professionals competed in 16 categories, ranging from annual reports and newsletters to community relations and social media campaigns. Judging was conducted by members of the PRSA Central Michigan Chapter. Chris Reckling, co-host of The Hampton Roads Show, was the event’s master of ceremonies.

    Taking home 2016 Pinnacle Awards were: 

    · Hampton Roads Community Foundation: first place for Newsletters ($5,000 and above); first place for Annual Reports ($5,000 and above)


    · Cox Communications: first place for Annual Reports ($4,999 and below); honorable mention for Creative Writing ($4,999 and below)

    · Brickell & Partners and St. Mary’s Home: second place for Annual Reports ($5,000 and above)

    · Ferguson Enterprises:  second place for Creative Writing ($4,999 and below)

    · DIA, in partnership with Ferguson Enterprises: first place for Websites ($5,000 and above)

    · Eastern Virginia Medical School: first place for Creative Writing ($4,999 and below); Magazines ($4,999 and below); Media Relations ($4,999 and below); and Video Programs ($4,999 and below). EVMS also won the Pinnacle Award for Best in Show, for its outstanding media relations campaign on Dr. Howard Jones.

    · Hampton Roads Planning District Commission: second place in Publications ($4,999 and below); second place for Video Programs ($4,999 and below)

    · Cahoon & Cross, in partnership with Hampton Roads Planning District Commission and askHRgreen.org:  first place for Video Programs ($5,000 and above); second place for Magazines ($4,999 and below)

    · PRR Inc. and Elizabeth River Crossings: first place for Publications ($4,999 and below); Media Relations ($5,000 and above); Community Relations Campaign ($5,000 and above); Websites ($4,999 and below)

    · Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center: first place for Social Media ($4,999 and below)

    · Mackey Inc. and Partnership for a Healthier America:  second place for Special Events ($5,000 and above)

    · Meridian Group and Spinrite LP: first place for Special Events ($5,000 and above)

    In addition to awards for programs and tactics, two public relations practitioners were honored for contributions to the profession and to the chapter. The practitioner award categories were judged by a panel of three accredited PRSA chapter members.  


    Carol Hanna Branch, APR, received the P. Lee Starkey Pinnacle in Public Relations Award. The annual award, named for long-time PRSA-HR member and consummate professional during his many years at Virginia Natural Gas, honors an accredited member of PRSA-HR who has worked in the public relations field for 10 years or more, demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and chapter contributions. A lecturer and teacher at Old Dominion University, Branch also serves as the faculty advisor for the student chapter of PRSA and mentors students as they study for careers in public relations. 

    Courtney Anderson, APR, was named the PRSA Hampton Roads Member of the Year in recognition of her significant contributions to the organization in the past year. Anderson, a senior communications specialist at Ferguson Enterprises, has served in just about every role available in the local PRSA chapter. Her leadership skills and ability to inspire others to action have resulted in impressive changes that have moved the chapter forward.
