Get to Know Kenita Bowers, Our Newest PRSAHR Board Director

Kenita Bowers (in photo above with daughter Koi) is a lifelong Norfolk resident who worked at WAVY TV before going into public relations. She recently became the newest director of the PRSAHR Board. Read on for a fun Q&A with Kenita:

What do you do for a living, and where?
I am the coordinator of community affairs & media relations for Isle of Wight County Schools.

How long have you been at this job?
    Three years.

What did you do before this?
I was the community affairs media coordinator & producer at WAVY TV 10/WVBT FOX43.

How long have you been a member of PRSAHR?
    Two years.

Any family you want to mention?
    I have a 9-year-old daughter named Koi.

    Where did you attend school?
I received my bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism from Hampton University and a master’s degree in public relations from Norfolk State University.

How did you get into public relations?
My very first job when I was 15 years old was at the Boys & Girls Club and my title was public relations coordinator. My duties included managing the front desk, answering phones, registering new members and giving tours of the building. I absolutely loved it! A few years later while I was attending Hampton University, we had a new professor join our department and she taught a public relations course. I enjoyed the class and realized that was what I wanted to do.

What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a news anchor. My sisters and I used to make our own news shows and talk shows. I also anchored the morning news show in high school, so I figured that's what I was going to do in life.

Who has been the most important person in your life? Can you tell us a bit about him or her? What lessons did he or she teach you?
My mother has been the most important person in my life. I admire her strength and tenacity. She is someone who has always been supportive and encouraged me to never give up.

    What are you proudest of?
I am proud of my daughter. Sometimes I still can't believe that I am actually her mom! She is a very special and wonderful girl.

Do you have any favorite stories from your work life?
Throughout my career, I have always enjoyed opportunities where I am able to serve the community. Some of my favorite memories have been working with the March of Dimes, managing the Coats for Kids and Operation School Supplies programs and sponsoring a family in need. Working at WAVY TV 10 was an awesome experience. It was neat to have the opportunity to work alongside the TV personalities that I grew up watching. In my current role, I am referred to as the "voice" of the school division particularly because I am the person that makes the phone calls for school closings and inclement weather. Whenever I meet someone in the community for the first time, their reaction is always "Oh, I feel like I know you — you call my house all the time!" It never gets old.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I enjoy traveling, going out to eat, shopping and spending time with my daughter.

    What makes you smile?
Seeing my daughter smile. And shoes!

What’s a fun fact about yourself that people might be surprised to learn?
I consider myself to be an introverted extrovert. Most people think that I am very outgoing, but I can actually be very shy and enjoy quiet time alone.
