Board Member Profiles - Becky Lawson

    Meet Becky Lawson
PRSA Hampton Roads Chapter Membership Chair
Becky decided she wanted a career in public relations when she was at attending Tidewater Community College and met someone in the field. She liked the dynamic of the job as it provided opportunities to do a wide-range of duties. She transferred and graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in the early ‘80s.

A native of Portsmouth, Becky chose to spend her career in Hampton Roads because of her love of the area. Most of her career has been spent in healthcare public relations, due to the influence of her mother, who was a nurse for 25 years. She worked for a variety of health organizations— Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters, Maryview Medical Center, LifeNet Health and Sentara Healthcare.

Becky spent several years as a freelancer and owned her own business where she was able to expand her PR skills beyond healthcare. She has been a member of the Hampton Roads Chapter of PRSA since 1983, minus a couple of years. She obtained her APR in 2002 and proudly shares the distinction and her passion for the field. She has served on the chapter’s board of directors for ten years and was president in 2007. Since January, she works at Cox Communications in the Public Affairs department.

A crafter at heart, in her spare time Becky scrapbooks and makes lots of crafts to share with friends and family. She calls the Western Branch section of Chesapeake her home and lives there with her husband of 26 years, two daughters, 22 and 17 and her 85 year old mother. Her health and family are her first priorities in life.
