ODU's PRSSA Chapter Needs Our Help!

A message from ODU PRSSA Faculty Adviser Brendan O'Hallarn, Ph.D.

Hello again, PRSA Hampton Roads! In September, I reached out to the membership, seeking guest speakers for a new class I am teaching to Old Dominion University students this fall, Media Relations. Boy, did you folks deliver! In the next four weeks, we will be hosting two panels of experts from the ranks of talented local communication professionals in the class.

As any good public relations person will tell you, don’t change what is working. So, I’m asking again!

On Dec. 3, our department, Communication & Theatre Arts, is hosting a day of programming dedicated to strategic communications and designed to spotlight our talented graduates of the program. The initiative is a partnership of the Department and ODU PRSSA. And COVID-19 will not deter us – the entire event will be hosted in sessions on Zoom.

We are planning a full day of programming. At 12:30 p.m., we will host our first ever “Student Showcase” – a virtual forum where students in the program can present outstanding strategic communications projects they have done in their classes. If a conscientious but kind PRSA Hampton Roads member was willing to serve as one of our judges, that would be great.

At 4:30 p.m., we will host a PR Peer Mentor Happy Hour. We are seeking a handful of local pros to host conversations in Zoom breakout rooms on topics of particular interest to our ODU students, skills such as networking, succeeding in the first job and others. We have already booked one Zoom Room with former ODU PRSSA presidents Hang Tran and Rikki Eskelund, on how to use PRSSA leadership as a springboard.

Finally, at 8 p.m. we are hosting a panel of ODU “stars” – graduates from our department who have gone on to amazing things. The panel is free and open to the public, and we would love PRSA Hampton Roads members to attend.

You can reach out to me at [email protected] if you are interested, or if you have questions.

Thank you, as always, for the kind and generous support of ODU PRSSA. We hope to see some of you in December!
