What Does an Award-Winning Press Room Look Like?

You may have heard that our August meeting will discuss how to create an award-winning press room. But what does an “award-winning” press room look like and why do you need one? Here are a few answers from our friends at Ferguson, who will also share their wisdom with us at our meeting on Aug. 16.

Top five features of an online press room

    1. Content organized by industry type, so media can easily find news relevant to their trade
    2. Search capability to find content by keyword
    3. A media center with downloadable high-resolution images and other multimedia content
    4. Fast facts on your organization
    5. Links to social profiles

    Why is it buzzworthy?

The number one rule for developing an online press room is to think like a journalist. And that’s exactly what Ferguson did with the organization and design of their site. It is a hub for photo-enhanced stories that showcase Ferguson as an industry leader. The site allows the media to quickly find information about the company, business groups, Ferguson Cares and industry trends.

In 2015, the Ferguson press room received a major overhaul and in 2016, it received the following awards:

    • Bronze Anvil award from the Public Relations Society of America
    • Pinnacle award from PRSA Hampton Roads
    • Platinum award from PR News
    • Award for publication excellence from APEX Awards

Besides national award recognition, members of the media have also commented on the usefulness of the press room. “The press room looks great! Very easy to navigate, and I love the ability to download images,” said one writer. Another commented, “We’re doing a shopping feature, and I was able to pull an image. That Ferguson press room is AWESOME!”
