ONE-MAN PUBLIC AFFAIRS SHOP TAKES ON SEQUESTRATION
Imagine trying get1.6 million people on the same page, while navigating various political and business interests and the Peninsula/Southside split.
That's the massive public relations job of Rear Adm. Craig R. Quigley, U.S. Navy (Ret.), executive director of the Hampton Roads Military and Federal Facilities Alliance.
Come to the PRSA-Hampton Roads lunch on May 15 to hear Quigley discuss "How to Communicate the Future of the Federal Presence in Hampton Roads."
You'll learn:
- about the economic impact of the federal presence in Hampton Roads and why you should care about sequestration
- about the Hampton Roads Military and Federal Facilities Alliance (http://www.hrmffa.org) -- what it is, who's on the board and why it's important
- how Quigley, a team of one, goes about educating an entire region and trying to find common ground among 13 cities and counties, without the ability to advertise (e.g. public speaking, earned media)
In September 2010, Quigley assumed his current duties as iexecutive director of the Hampton Roads Military and Federal Facilities Alliance, a public-private partnership dedicated to attracting, retaining and growing federal facilities in the region.
Quigley spent 27 years on active duty, serving as deputy assistant secretary of defense (public affairs) at the Pentagon. Upon retiring, he became vice president of communications and public affairs for Lockheed Martin Maritime Systems & Sensors, leading a 30-person communications team across eight states for a $3.5-billion operating company. Quigley returned to federal government service as the director of communication for U.S. Joint Forces Command in Hampton Roads.

President's Report
LOTS MORE TO COME FOR OUR CHAPTER IN 2013 !
I may be a bit biased, but I think it has been an amazing year for our PRSA chapter. And the most amazing part is that we’re just getting started.
We have had some informative and inspiring programs thanks to great support from our members. It has been personally gratifying to catch up with so many people I’ve known for decades as well as to meet some bright young up-and- comers as we confront the changing landscape of the profession together.
But wait! There’s more!
We are working hard behind the scenes to round out the year with programs and projects to make us all proud. So make plans to be a part of it. Get our your Outlook calendars (or your day planners if that’s still your thing) and mark off these dates:
May 15: Rear Admiral Craig Quigley presents his public affairs strategy for mitigating the affects of sequestration on Hampton roads at the membership luncheon. Also, meet Theo Clark, Norfolk State University’s PRSSA President, as he reports on his trip to the national conference that we helped to sponsor.
June 13: It's the 2013 PRSAHR Pinnacle Awards luncheon, emceed by our founding 1983 president, Ken Wheeler, APR.
August 8: Capitalize on content creation with Anthony LaFauce and Kaitlin Bowen of Spectrum. They'll present how to create content for BOTH digital and traditional media to allow you to increase your footprint without increasing your budget at our luncheon meeting. LaFauce has spoken at national PRSA conferences.
September 13: Join us in the United Way Day of Caring by helping non-profits with their public relations programs. Susan Mayo is putting together the plans and will be putting out the details soon.
Sept/Oct: Professional Development Conference. Fresh off the planning for a national conference, April Sciacchitano of CRT/Tanaka is spearheading plans for our chapter's annual conference. Stay tuned for details.
November 7: National PRSA President Mickey Nall, partner at Ogilvy, presents to the membership luncheon to help celebrate our 30th anniversary and installation of officers.
Be on the look out for more details as these events unfold, but mark them on your calendar now so you don’t schedule any important meetings during these happenings. See you at PRSA!

Overcoming Social Media Anxiety
A HUGE thank you to Debbie Friez of Burrelles Luce for her down to earth workshop on social media at our April workshop at the Virginia Beach Central Library. She competently fielded question after question and was only saved by the bell. The main complaint was that two hours wasn’t long enough. Thanks to all who came.
