    Slate of Officers 2018

    PRSA Hampton Roads members will vote at the Nov. 15 meeting on the slate of officers nominated to serve the chapter in 2018. Nominees are:

    President-elect: Sarah E. Buck. She is Cox Communications’ public affairs manager. She currently is treasurer of the PRSA chapter board and has served as secretary and as a chapter director. She previously was Supervalu community and government relations manager and Farm Fresh Food & Pharmacy public relations manager. She earned a degree in communications studies from Virginia Tech and was just named a 40 Under 40 honoree by Inside Business.
    Treasurer: Jennifer McCarrel, APR. She is Eastern Virginia Medical School’s assistant director of marketing and communications. She currently is treasurer of the PRSA chapter board and has served as a chapter director and co-chaired the Professional Development Committee. She previously was public relations coordinator for Virginia Beach Public Schools and worked in public relations for Norfolk Public Schools. She earned a degree in English and journalism from Old Dominion University and is working on her master’s degree.
    Secretary: Dan Shuman. He is LifeNet Health’s senior manager of marketing communications. He currently is serving as a PRSA chapter director. He previously worked in marketing communications at Eastern Virginia Medical School following a career in journalism in Georgia and Virginia. He earned a bachelor’s degree in communication from East Carolina University and a master’s degree in professional writing from Old Dominion University.

     

    Directors Serving (3-year terms)

    Julie Braley. She is City of Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation’s public relations and content manager. She co-chairs the PRSA chapter’s Professional Development Committee and has chaired its Public Service Committee. She previously was the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia & the Eastern Shore’s communications manager and was the area Muscular Dystrophy Association’s executive director. She earned a degree in communications and public relations from The Ohio State University.
    Holly Christopher. She is City of Norfolk Recreation, Parks & Open Space’s division head for public information. She currently co-chairs the PRSA chapter’s Professional Development Committee. She previously was The Up Center’s marketing and communications manager. She earned a degree in Environmental Science from the University of Michigan and a master’s degree in communication management from the University of Southern California.
    Lynette James. She is marketing coordinator for the City of Portsmouth’s Department of Museums. She previously worked in tourism communications for the City of Portsmouth. She has served on several of the PRSA chapter committees. She previously worked in public relations for the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English and communications from Denison University.

     

    Not up for election but serving next year on the board are:

    President: Sally Kirby Hartman, APR. She is theHampton Roads Community Foundation’s vice president for communications. She is the PRSA chapter’s president-elect and has served on its board of directors, co-chaired its membership committee and been board liaison to the Old Dominion University PRSSA Chapter. She previously was associate editor for Virginia Business magazine and earned a degree in journalism from the University of Arkansas.
    Past president: Sonja Barisic, APR. She is St. Mary’s Home's director of marketing communications and is president of the PRSA chapter. She has served as the chapter’s president-elect, treasurer, secretary and director. She previously was an Associated Press correspondent and reporter. She earned a degree in interdisciplinary studies with a focus in journalism and women’s studies from Miami University in Ohio.

     

    Directors serving three-year terms:

    Burton St. John, APR is an Old Dominion University professor who chairs its Communications and Theatre Arts Department. He is in his second year as a PRSA chapter director. He earned a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in communications from Wichita State University and a Ph. D. in American Studies from Saint Louis University.
    Lori Sharp is Bon Secours Hampton Roads’ public relations coordinator. She is in her first year as a PRSA chapter director and has chaired the chapter’s Pinnacle Awards. She previously was Norfolk Public Library’s public relations specialist. She earned a bachelor’s degree in communications studies from Virginia Tech and a master’s degree in college student affairs administration from the University of Georgia.
    Debbie Schwartz is Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia’s director of development and community relations. She is in her second year as a PRSA chapter director and chairs the chapter’s Diversity Committee. She previously was public relations director for DIA Advertising and Public Relations. She earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of South Carolina.

     

    Assembly delegate:

    Courtney Anderson Muller, APR is Ferguson Enterprises’ senior communications specialist and previously was the company’s project manager for communications and change management and an email marketing specialist. She is the chapter’s current assembly delegate and is a past PRSA chapter president, president-elect, treasurer, secretary and director. She earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from Virginia Wesleyan College.
