Member Monday - Get to Know Your Vice President Sally Hartman

PRSA Hampton Roads President-Elect Sally Hartman has been a member of PRSA since she began working in public relations 25 years ago. She has served in several capacities on the board, including as liaison for the PRSSA Chapter at Old Dominion University and co-chair of the membership committee. She is known for many a brilliant idea and has been the brains behind many a successful program at PRSA Hampton Roads through the years. Read on to learn more about Sally.

Sally is vice president for communications at the Hampton Roads Community Foundation. How did she launch her successful 25-year career in public relations? “Happenstance,” she says. “I was editor of a business magazine when I was recruited to start a communications program at the community foundation. I had met the head of the foundation while volunteering on a marketing committee with him for another organization, and he remembered me.”

Sally joined PRSA because she was eager to learn about her new profession. “I had worked in media my entire career and did not know anything about public relations,” she said. For those who are new to the public relations profession, Sally’s recommendation is, “get involved in PRSA, subscribe to the incredible array of blogs, e-newsletters and webinars related to the field, find a mentor, volunteer and always keep learning something new.” Sound advice!

    Now for the important questions:

    1. If you didn't work in public relations, what would you be doing instead?
Traveling, going to the gym more and auditing college classes for fun.
    2. What’s your favorite book, movie or song of all time? Why?
My favorite song is “Step Out the Door.” The reason? My son Luke Hartman wrote it during high school and surprised me with a recording of it for Mother’s Day at a time when I had no idea he could write songs, sing or play the guitar well.
I thought he was doing homework when he was actually writing songs.
    3. What’s one thing about you that others are surprised to discover?
I love taking improv comedy classes at the Push Comedy Theater, am just finishing my third round of 501-level classes and am in an improv troupe.
    4. What's the last picture you took with your phone?
      A
photo of two bottles of wine from the Maury Auction’s Wine Pull. I sent it as an example to my Rotary Club friends since they are planning a Wine Pull at the May 19 Suds & Buds party.
    5. Name 5 people you'd invite to your dream dinner party.
Maya Angelou, Joe Biden, Amelia Earhart, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Robin Williams.
